The equation is தமிழ் + சுப்பிரமணிய பாரதியார் = (உன்மத்தம்) to the power infinity. A late analysis on these two movies. Better late than never. And for the verses of Maha Kavi, time and space aren’t constraints. The two movies have many similarities with each other. Firstly, the title of the movie. The title comes from verses of சுப்பிரமணிய பாரதியார். Both movies were directed by Manirathnam, Music by ARR, Lyrics penned by Vairamuthu (4/6 songs of Kaatru veliyidai penned by Vairamuthu. 1 by Karky, 1 by Shellee). The Mani-ARR- Vairamuthu combo deliver a complete cherish able package most of the times.
The former was released in the year 2002. Those good old days where Manirathnam transformed all subtle emotions to the tee on screen. கன்னத்தில் முத்தமிட்டால் isn’t an exception in that era. It is an exceptional movie in all fronts. The plot, the lyrics, songs and the back ground music all strike the chord to meet the core emotion of social animals; LOVE which only brings peace. Dialogues by Sujatha Rangarajan. ❤ It should have been little easier for Mr.Sujatha to write dialogues for the character Thiruchelvan, pen name INDIRA. Simply for the fact that he might have connected more with himself being an engineer and a great writer writing in a pen name ‘Sujatha’, name of his lovable wife.
The same enacted so well by R. Madhavan, as Appa of 3, oiled hair, with framed glasses. Even in Irudhi Sutru Mathi tells a dialogue ‘Ara kizhama irundhalum nee siricha nalla dhan ikidhu’. For R.Madhavan female fan following bases actually exceed the number of madhar sangams. Simran Bagga as Indira. Mother of 3 and doesn’t look like one. One of the very few actresses who looks absolutely stunning even in ‘Kasangina’ sarees and an improper bun. P.S. Keerthana as T. Amudha brings about all emotions of a 9 year old adopted child well on screen. And a stunning performance from Nandita Das as M.D. Shyama. All supporting actors doing a notable job. The plot simply speaks about the basic human ingredient love, pain caused in abundance when love for the land becomes a power struggle, how it affects humans physically, mentally, psychologically leading to dysfunctional families and creating damaged individuals who damage many others leading to nuclear chain reaction of emotional damage.
The later was released in the year 2017. A stunning view of Kashmir, awesome camera play right from scene one where Dr. Leela Abraham is seen in the eye ball of Varun Chakravarthy “VC”. கன்னத்தில்முத்தமிட்டால் is no less in terms of choice of location. The basic difference is the location. Danushkodi and Kashmir. The plot is all about Varun Chakravarthy, a patriotic air force officer with malignant self-love and traits of commitment phobia. Dr. Leela Abraham, an empath looking for an equal, more connected relationship from VC who lacks understanding on the concept of empathy for others. The ‘Siruthai’ famous Karthi as VC, a different look from the village rogue of ‘Paruthiveeran’ to well dressed, good looking Air Force officer. Aditi Rao Hydari, that MGR colour heroine, beautiful in designer, embroidery sarees and well knitted salwars, good with expressions as Dr. Leela Abraham. ‘Evalo azhaga doctor irundha evalo dharava vena oosi pottukalam’ should be the mind voice of many guys while seeing her on screen. VC realizes the hurt caused by him to Leela when captured by Pak soldiers, escapes and comes in search of Leela to ask for forgiveness.
While both plots deal with love, there are many visible differences. In கன்னத்தில்முத்தமிட்டால் emotions speak more and there resides a perfect sync while expressing the emotion through dialogues. Say, the scene where Amudha leaves to railway station from school, both Indiras come in search of her and Simran gives a beautiful expression of ‘Am I not good enough for you as a mother?’ even when she doesn’t utter any dialogues her emotions speak louder and dialogues unuttered reach the spectators in no time.
In Kaatru Veliyidai the emotions are more narrative as dialogues. The scenes where Leela comes to VC and reminds him about his promise on registering their marriage, despite her emotions of disappointment and breaking the promise by VC for yet another time doesn’t make an impact. Same when she walks away stating that ‘She is a doctor and knows how to take care of her child’. The former makes one cry and viewers leave with a heavy heart. The later makes one appreciate the settings of the scene and location.
So to sum up, on title point of view, be it கன்னத்தில் முத்தமிட்டால் from சின்னஞ் சிறு கிளியே-கண்ணம்மா! – கண்ணம்மா-என் குழந்தை or காற்று வெளியிடை from கண்ணம்மாவின் காதல் of சுப்பிரமணிய பாரதி make one feel the emotion and touch hearts effortlessly and proves why he is Maha Kavi. The movies with these titles vary on the intensity of emotions that they radiate. Writing கன்னத்தில் முத்தமிட்டால் the movie as ‘Kannathil Muthamittal’ don’t emote the entire feel of the movie. It gives only lesser ecstasy. கன்னத்தில் முத்தமிட்டால் the movie gives the feel ‘உன்னைத் தழுவிடிலோ,-கண்ணம்மா! உன்மத்த மாகு தடீ!’ than ‘Kannathil Muthamittal’ so the movie takes for a glide over the next lines of the song.
But the movie காற்று வெளியிடை just stays as Kaatru Veliyidai and it doesn’t glide over the next lines of the song. The fill in the blanks question is left unfilled. Whereas if the emotions were heavy on screen it would have been duly filled with கண்ணம்மா! by viewers in no time. In the movie Gajni, Mottamadi Kalpana spins a story on the first meeting with Sanjay Ramasamy in airport. “Avan enna paathu Haaii apidinu sonnan. Na avana paathu Hi apidinu sonnen”. Similarly having Maha Kavi’s lines as title, the crew said காற்று வெளியிடை but it was ‘Kaatru Veliyidai’ only.
That was கன்னத்தில் முத்தமிட்டால் and this was Kaatru Veliyidai. That makes and tells all the difference. Let the next one from the trio combo be like கன்னத்தில் முத்தமிட்டால் and duly glide to உள்ளந்தான் கள்வெறி கொள்ளு தடீ!
